Program Description
The NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program
(USRP), offers undergraduates in science, math
and engineering mentored internship experiences
at the Kennedy Space Center and all 10 NASA
Centers and research support facilities across
the U.S. The program provides hands-on technical
and research experiences with outstanding NASA
mentors. Students work on practical problems
that will see real applications in aerospace
or on future NASA missions.
Program Goal
The goals of this program are to provide undergraduate
students with hands on, challenging, research
experiences that stimulate continued student
interest in the fields aligned with NASA’s research
mission.
Providing degree-related hands-on internships
to talented undergraduate students pursuing
academic degrees that align with NASA’s critical
workforce competency needs.
• Providing a high-quality, nation-wide undergraduate
hands-on experiential program in a technical
environment.
• Attracting and stimulating a diverse group
of highly qualified undergraduate students from
a wide array of academic institutions.
• Coordinating undergraduate research internships
at NASA field centers under the guidance of
NASA scientists and engineers.
Eligibility
NASA is seeking participation from students
who represent America’s rich and diverse population.
Female and male students of all races, creeds,
colors, national origins, ages, and disabilities
are encouraged to apply. Applicants must meet
the following eligibility requirements to participate
in NASA-USRP:
• U.S. Citizenship
• Classified as a Sophomore, Junior or Senior
at the time of the internship.
• Enrolled full-time in an accredited U.S. college
or university (community college students may
apply, however placement is contingent on matriculation
into a four-year institution as a rising Junior)
• Academic major or demonstrated coursework
concentration in engineering, mathematics, computer
science, or physical/life sciences
• Demonstrated strong interest/commitment to
one of the above career fields or disciplines
(e.g., science/math/engineering fairs, clubs,
or awards; tutoring/mentoring; internships or
other related experience)
• Minimum cumulative grade point average of
3.0 on a scale of 4.0
The following matrix indicates the primary student
academic disciplines each NASA facility and
the Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking.
Specific research positions are currently being
identified based on this disciplines matrix.
Students selected for NASA-USRP will receive
an email offer letter specifying the actual
research position and the corresponding NASA
mentor.
