Higher Education Project in partnership with the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program ESMD Faculty ProjectWhat is it?Summer 2008 will mark the second year of The Exploration Systems Mission Directorate Space Grant Faculty Project. This Project was established to create a more synergistic approach for collaboration between NASA and the academic community that contributes to the Agency's objectives. Ten faculty will be competitively selected to work for five weeks at the ten NASA Field Centers. Each faculty will be tasked to gather senior design project ideas and internship opportunities relative to Exploration in support of the ESMD Space Grant Program. THEY WILL NOT BE CONDUCTING RESEARCH. In addition to this task, each faculty will be required to capture data on all educational projects funded by ESMD education projects managed out of NASA Headquarters, and identify all educational projects funded by ESMD agency wide. In the Summer of 2008, all faculty will attend a four day meeting at KSC approximately two weeks after completing their tenure. In the lessons learned from the Summer of 2007 it was discovered that their needs to be some lag time between their Center completion and the meeting at KSC. This is due to information that is collected during the last week, and time needed to write up a summary. What are the dates of the Project? Each selected faculty will work at a NASA field Center from Monday, June 2 -Wednesday, July 2, 2008. All faculty will come to Kennedy Space Center July 14-17, 2008. How much is the stipend? All faculty will receive $7500 as a stipend (faculty selected for JPL and ARC will receive an addition $1000 due to an increased locality expense). Travel allowances will also be given for costs incurred when traveling to the appointed Center, Kennedy Space Center, and to support and present at a regional Space Grant Conference. How do I apply?Contact your local Space Grant to inform them of your interest in applying. (There is a link on the home page with contact information for all space grants). Go to this website to apply secureworkgroups.grc.nasa.gov/esmd-sg-fp You will need to join the site. The community password is ESMDFaculty. Please read the instructions before beginning your application. When is the deadline for applying?Friday, January 11, 2008 When will I be notified if I have been selected?Mid-February If selected what will be required of me?You will have to obtain a DUNS and CCR number so you personally can contract with the government. This is a simple procedure, but it is a bit time consuming. It can be completed online. If you are selected your will receive specific instructions. Employees at the NASA Centers may be able to suggest some housing options, but you will be need to acquire your own housing and transportation arrangements. You will work a 40 hour week at your assigned Center. You will attend the meeting at KSC after completing your Center tenure. During this meeting the faculty will compile their findings into a final report. You will attend one of the regional space grant conferences in the Fall of 2008. What are some benefits of the Project?Where can I get more information?Click here for the 2008 Faculty Project Flyer. You can download the document entitled ESMD SG Faculty Project Description 2008 for more specific information. The 2007 Final Report: ESMD SG Faculty Project is available on the application site. This document contains specifics on projects that were identified by the 2007 faculty cohorts, along with lessons learned. |
